David Gard

David Gard is a senior consultant with 5 Lakes Energy where his primary focus is on modeling least-cost compliance pathways for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan in various states. Before joining 5 Lakes, he briefly directed the Oberlin Project, a local partnership in Northeast Ohio aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fostering community resilience.

David spent more than 10 years with the Michigan Environmental Council. While there he served as energy program director where he helped lay the groundwork for Michigan’s expansion of renewable power and energy efficiency programs. He educated a range of audiences about the benefits of clean energy technologies, managed coalitions of allies, and prepared key messengers to engage state and federal legislators, state regulators and agency officials, and local policymakers.

Earlier in his career, David worked as a design engineer in the logistics industry, and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy.

David’s formal education spans the fields of business, natural resource policy, and engineering. He completed the dual MBA/MS degree program at the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute, where he studied sustainable business, industrial ecology, and manufacturing operations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University.

David is board vice president for Michigan Energy Options, and serves on the external advisory board of the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems.
