The Institute for Energy Innovation has released a comprehensive report identifying the barriers that impede Michigan from joining leading states in accelerating the transition to a clean energy economy. The paper explores trends in innovation in energy markets, regulatory paradigms and the improving performance and economics of advanced low-carbon energy technologies. In addition to examining the transactional, economic, technology, policy and other barriers that prevent Michigan from fully gaining the benefits that leadership in advance energy systems would bring, the report provides 40 specific recommendations that would enable Michigan to accelerate its progress. The report concludes “The transformation of Michigan’s power system is inevitable; the only variables are the rate at which the transformation takes place and the extent to which Michigan participates in the opportunities that the global energy transformation brings.” 5 Lakes Energy was contracted to produce the report which was funded by the Mott Foundation.
