Jonathan Ogland-Hand

Jonathan Ogland-Hand, PhD, is a Senior Consultant with 5 Lakes Energy focusing on electricity system modeling in the Midwest.

Jonathan has a multidisciplinary background in engineering and environmental science with expertise in process-level modeling, techno-economic analysis, and energy systems. He has researched energy storage, geothermal energy, CO2 capture and storage, carbon dioxide removal, and renewable energy integration. To do this, he has built, used, and integrated tools such as capacity expansion models, economic dispatch models, cost models, thermodynamic process models, and reservoir simulation.
 
When he is not crunching numbers at his desk, Jonathan enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with his family. He also volunteers on the executive council of the Grand Rapids Climate Coalition, a grassroots civic organization in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
 
Jonathan has a master’s and PhD in environmental science from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University. He also completed a two-year postdoc in the Earth Science Department at ETH-Zurich, in Switzerland.
