SARAH BUCHHORN

Sarah Buchhorn is a Consultant with 5 Lakes Energy, specializing in building and transportation decarbonization. 

Sarah brings a strong technical background and a deep commitment to equitable climate action. Her experience spans research, planning, and implementation to advance climate mitigation and resilience across sectors. She holds a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA in Chemistry from Pomona College.

Before joining 5 Lakes Energy, Sarah managed sustainability strategy development and implementation at the Chicago Housing Authority. In this role, she led utility data collection and reporting, oversaw energy efficiency retrofits, supported renewable energy development and monitoring, and directed the development of building electrification guidelines, sustainable landscaping guidance, and a portfolio-wide emissions reduction strategy.

Before that, she worked at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, contributing to regional transportation and emissions modeling. She applied her skills in Python and GIS to enhance models, integrate new datasets, and develop visual content for the region’s climate action plan, greenhouse gas inventory, and related initiatives.

At 5 Lakes Energy, Sarah supports clients in their energy and emissions reduction efforts, including work on utility energy waste reduction plans.

Sarah lives in Chicago and enjoys running, traveling with friends near and far, and biking along the lakefront and elsewhere.
