On June 6, 2017, 5 Lakes Energy Senior Consultant, Laura Sherman, spoke at the Asthma Initiative of Michigan’s 2017 Partnership Forum about outdoor air pollution and human health. Air pollution from sources including coal-fired power plants and vehicles impacts human health across Michigan. For example, particulates, nitrogen oxides, and asthma exacerbate respiratory distress among the more than 225,000 children with asthma in our state. This leads to lower school attendance, decreased student performance, and life-long health consequences. Shifting to renewable energy and electric vehicles significantly decreases air pollution and has a measurable benefit for human health.
