Jobs in the Balance: Building Toward a Clean Steel Transition in Indiana

Commissioned by Indiana Conservation Voters, this report prepared by 5 Lakes Energy and Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute assesses what a transition to newer, cleaner iron and steelmaking technologies might look like for Northwest Indiana. Roughly half of the United States’s primary steel production comes from Northwest Indiana’s steel mills. But job losses are mounting as automation and competition increase. This report examines how cleaner steel production methods can provide a pathway to more local jobs, healthier communities, and greater competitiveness in the global market.
